1. If you have never seen a glacier before and you would like to experience these stunning ice giants a little bit closer, come to the breathtaking area of Skaftafell. Skaftafell is located in Vatnajökull national park, the filming location of movies like Batman Begins, Interstellar and the Game of Thrones series. To maximize the time spent on ice, we drive all the way to the terminus of Falljökull glacier in our 4×4 truck. Before you step on to the ice you will learn the proper way to put on and use the provided glacier gear. We aim to spend around one and a half hour on the ice, exploring moulins, crevasses and more other-wordly formations. Along the way your guide will share ineresting facts about these formations and the origins of the glacier as well as interesting local stories.

• 5Wonderful small group trip

  Jose our guide was excellent. He was really knowledgeable and passionate and paid very careful attention to our safety. We were a small group of four and really enjoyed climbing on/up the ice. The colours and formations were beautiful. Thanks for a great experience Jose.

• 5Amazing tour, great guide

  That was absolutely fantastic! Our guide gave us an extensive explanation of the glacier, how it's formed, its peculiarities, the place's history, everything in a very clear and informative way. She drove us to the base of the glacier, and then we started our walk from there - it might look difficult, but it requires minimal ability - at a very calm pace, with everyone together at all times. I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to see such an incredible formation from nearby.

• 5Fantastic tour operator and amazing guide!

  I can’t say enough about the level of professionalism of this tour company. Communication was perfect. Our guide Svanhvít was absolutely fantastic. Being a senior has its challenges. She was always astute whether I was comfortable or feeling apprehensive. She reached for my hand to help me when I felt less secure. I would recommend this company with an enthusiastic thumbs up. So well organized. Great guide! Great communication! Being a small group was fantastic!! And being on the glacier was an experience I’ll cherish.

  We enjoyed this experience! We liked that it was a small group (maximum of 8 people) and that they drove us directly up to the glacier. The rest of the tour groups from the larger companies dropped them off in a parking lot and they had a long hike to get to the actual glacier, so we got to spend more time on the ice. Unfortunately our guide was not super chatty, so we just followed him around and he stopped to let us take pictures. He did let us take a peek at where another group was doing an ice climbing tour!

  The glacier tour was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and informative while hiking the glacier. We passed several other tours that were far larger and they also didn’t appear to travel nearly as far up the glacier. At no point were we rushed and you could tell our guide genuinely enjoyed her job. I would highly recommend this on your trip to Iceland!

• 5Excellent guide and beautiful scenery!

  My partner and I chose this tour after seeing great reviews on reddit. We loved that the group was very small, and that the guide/vans are able to access the special road that takes you right up to the glacier as opposed to hiking through rock to get to the ice (aka, more time on the ice!). Our guide Vincent, was very knowledgable and educated us on the history and interested facts about glaciers. I would recommend the earliest tour as we got the glacier to ourselves for the first hour or so before the rest of the companies started showing up.

About Skaftafell

Skaftafell is a green pocket of Vatnajökull National Park in south-east Iceland, with glacier tongues, the Svartifoss waterfall and walking trails.

Skaftafell is a green oasis in south-east Iceland, set between black sand plains and the white ice of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap by volume. It forms part of Vatnajökull National Park, and from the visitor centre trails lead through birch scrub and heather to glacier tongues and waterfalls. The Skaftafellsjökull, an outlet glacier, is in view from several paths, and the huge outwash plain of Skeiðarársandur stretches to the coast.
