Experience the best of Yerevan

Yerevan is Armenia's pink-stoned capital, a city of wide squares, café terraces and museums, with Mount Ararat standing on its southern skyline.

The city grew around Erebuni, a fortress founded in 782 BC, though most of today's centre was built in the Soviet era from the soft pink and orange tuff that earned Yerevan its nickname, the Pink City. Republic Square is the hub, framed by government buildings and museums. The Cascade, a giant stairway of terraces and sculpture, climbs a hillside, and the Matenadaran holds a famous collection of medieval manuscripts.

Some of the country's oldest sights are a short drive away. Garni, a first-century temple in Greco-Roman style, and Geghard, a monastery partly carved from the rock, stand in the gorge to the east. South of the city, Khor Virap monastery sits on a hill with Ararat rising behind it, and to the west Echmiadzin is the seat of the Armenian Church. Lake Sevan, a large high-altitude lake, is about an hour's drive north-east.

Armenian tables are generous: lavash flatbread baked in underground clay ovens, khorovats barbecue, stuffed vine leaves, and apricots, the national fruit, fresh in summer and dried the rest of the year. Armenian brandy has a long reputation, and coffee comes thick in small cups. Yerevan sits around a thousand metres up, so summers are hot and dry and winters cold; May, June and September to October are the most comfortable months.
