Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders, the falls stretch for well over a kilometre across the Zambezi River, and the spray rises so high it can be seen from far away. Paths through the rainforest on the Zimbabwean side lead to viewpoints facing the Main Falls, the Devil's Cataract and Danger Point, with rainbows dancing in the mist.
The Victoria Falls Bridge links Zimbabwe and Zambia over the gorge, with bungee jumps and gorge swings for the daring, and white-water rafting on the rapids below is famously wild. Helicopter flights over the falls, known as the flight of angels, and sunset cruises on the upper Zambezi among hippos and elephants are favourite ways to see the river.
Zambezi National Park and, across the border, Chobe National Park in Botswana, with its great elephant herds, are within reach for game drives. The town has craft markets with stone and wood carvings. High water from about February to May brings the most dramatic flow and drenching spray, while the drier months later in the year reveal more of the rock face and the gorge.
