Taipei sits in a basin ringed by green mountains, and Taipei 101, a 508-metre tower styled on bamboo segments, is its skyline marker. The National Palace Museum holds a vast collection of imperial Chinese art, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall stands at one end of a broad plaza, and Longshan Temple is a busy shrine of incense and carved dragons. Dihua Street preserves old shopfronts selling tea, herbs and dried goods.

Night markets are the city's social life, with Shilin and Raohe the best known. Beitou has sulphur hot springs and a hot-spring museum, Maokong's gondola climbs to tea houses, and Elephant Mountain gives the classic view of the skyline. Further out, Yangmingshan National Park has volcanic steam vents, and old Jiufen, Pingxi's sky lanterns and the coastal rocks of Yehliu make good day trips.

Taiwanese food is a joy to graze: beef noodle soup, xiaolongbao soup dumplings, oyster omelettes, braised pork rice and pineapple cakes, with bubble tea invented on the island. Autumn, from October to December, is the most comfortable season; spring brings drizzle, and summer is hot, humid and typhoon-prone.
