In WWII, Nationalist troops seized the most important pieces in order to prevent invaders from ransacking China's national treasures. A twist of fate eventually brought these treasures to Taiwan.

About Taipei

Taipei is Taiwan's capital, a hill-ringed city of night markets, temples, hot springs, tea houses and the tall Taipei 101 tower.

Taipei sits in a basin ringed by green mountains, and Taipei 101, a 508-metre tower styled on bamboo segments, is its skyline marker. The National Palace Museum holds a vast collection of imperial Chinese art, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall stands at one end of a broad plaza, and Longshan Temple is a busy shrine of incense and carved dragons. Dihua Street preserves old shopfronts selling tea, herbs and dried goods.

Top-ranked sights in Taipei: Shifen Waterfall, Taipei 101, Yehliu Geopark.
