Subotica's history has been shaped by Hungarian, Habsburg and Serbian rule, and its architecture shows it. Many of its residents speak Hungarian, and the streets reflect both traditions. The city hall, a Secession building with colourful ceramic roofs, and the Art Nouveau synagogue are among its finest buildings.

Palić, a lake and resort area a short drive from the centre, has forest paths and lakeside cafés. Ludaš Lake, a shallow lake and bird reserve, lies in the flat Pannonian plain, which stretches across the region. The Hungarian border is only about ten kilometres to the north.

The region's cooking is strongly Hungarian in character: bograč, a paprika stew of fish or meat, langos, fried dough, and fresh bread. Vojvodina wines are served widely. Winters bring snow and summers are hot, so visits in May or September are the most comfortable.
