Experience the best of Belgrade

Belgrade is Serbia's capital at the meeting of the Sava and the Danube, a city of a vast fortress, café-lined boulevards and nightlife on the river.

Belgrade stands where the Sava meets the Danube, and the old Kalemegdan Fortress occupies the ridge above the confluence, with walls, gates and a park that looks over both rivers. Knez Mihailova, the pedestrian main street, runs from the fortress to Republic Square. The Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, has a white marble dome.

Skadarlija, a cobbled street of old inns, was Belgrade's bohemian quarter, and the Nikola Tesla Museum holds the inventor's papers. Zemun, a former Habsburg town on the Danube, has red roofs and a tower on a hill, and Ada Ciganlija, a river island, has a lake beach. Floating clubs on the rivers, called splavovi, make Belgrade a late-night city. Novi Sad and the monasteries of Fruška Gora lie to the north-west.

Ćevapi, grilled minced-meat fingers in flatbread, pljeskavica, a large seasoned patty, and burek with yoghurt are the standard fare, with kajmak, a creamy dairy spread, ajvar, roasted red-pepper relish, and plum brandy. Kafanas, old-style taverns, still serve coffee and food into the night.
