Experience the best of St. George's

St George's wraps around the Carenage, a horseshoe-shaped natural harbour lined with colourful old warehouses, fishing boats and yachts. Streets climb steeply from the waterfront past churches and red-tiled roofs, and a tunnel through the ridge links the inner harbour with the seafront on the other side. Fort George, with its cannon on the headland, looks over the harbour and the open sea, and the Grenada National Museum occupies an old French barracks.

The market square sells spices, fruit and vegetables, and further out Gouyave, on the west coast, has a nutmeg processing station. Concord Falls drops through forest in the hills behind, and in the north-east a rum distillery at River Antoine still crushes its cane with a water wheel. North of town, an underwater sculpture park lies off the coast.

Callaloo soup, made from dasheen leaves and coconut milk, appears on many tables, with nutmeg ice cream and cocoa tea to follow. Spicemas, the carnival, fills the streets in August, with dawn parades of painted revellers, and the dry season runs from January to May.
