Experience the best of Santa Ana

Santa Ana is El Salvador's second city, a coffee town in the west with a neo-Gothic cathedral, an ornate theatre and a volcano to the south-west.

Santa Ana is the main city of western El Salvador, set among coffee-growing hills. Its Gothic Revival cathedral, with pointed arches in cream and white, stands on the central plaza beside the neoclassical city hall and the Teatro de Santa Ana, an ornate theatre that opened in 1910.

To the south-west, the Santa Ana volcano, the highest in El Salvador, has a green crater lake at its summit and can be climbed on a guided hike. Cerro Verde National Park looks across to the perfect cone of Izalco, and Lake Coatepeque, a deep blue caldera lake, lies at their foot. The Mayan site of Tazumal, in Chalchuapa, is a short drive west of the city.

Pupusas, thick corn tortillas stuffed with cheese, beans or pork and served with pickled cabbage, are the national dish, and coffee grown on the slopes of the volcano is roasted and served throughout the west. The clearest skies come in the dry months, from November to April.
