Riyadh sits on the Najd plateau in the centre of the Arabian Peninsula, a fast-growing capital of towers and wide highways. The Masmak Fortress, a fort of clay and mud brick, marks the recapture of the city in 1902 by Abdulaziz ibn Saud, who later founded the kingdom, and the Kingdom Centre tower has a sky bridge linking its two prongs. The National Museum tells the story of Arabia from prehistory to the present.

Diriyah, on the edge of the city, was the first capital of the Saudi state, and its mud-brick district of At-Turaif is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wadi Hanifa, a valley of palm groves and farms, runs through the city, and to the north-west the Edge of the World, a sheer cliff escarpment above a desert plain, draws people for sunset. Souq Al Zal, an old market, sells carpets, antiques and brass coffeepots.

Kabsa, rice with spiced lamb or chicken, jareesh, a cracked-wheat porridge, and mutabbaq fill traditional restaurants, while dates and cardamom-scented Arabic coffee are offered in greeting. Summers are very hot, often above forty degrees, and winter from November to March is mild.
