Experience the best of Jeddah
Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, is an old trading port and the gateway to Mecca, with a historic district of coral-stone houses.

Jeddah has been a port on the Red Sea since ancient times, and a landing point for pilgrims travelling to Mecca, which lies to the east. Al-Balad, its old quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves tall coral-stone houses with carved wooden balconies, called roshan, and narrow lanes, and the souks around them still trade in spices, textiles and perfume.
Jeddah's modern face lies along the Corniche, a waterfront of promenades, parks and open-air sculpture by artists such as Henry Moore and Joan Miró. King Fahd's Fountain shoots a jet of seawater high above the Red Sea, among the tallest fountains in the world, and the Al-Rahma Mosque appears to float at high tide. Offshore, coral reefs invite diving and snorkelling.
Hijazi cooking carries spices from across the pilgrimage routes: mutabbaq, a stuffed pan-fried pancake, ful, stewed fava beans, saleeg, creamy rice with chicken, and grilled fish from the Red Sea. Dates and cardamom-scented Arabic coffee are offered as a welcome. The weather is hot and humid for most of the year, and the cooler months from November to March are the most pleasant.
