Maun lies on the Thamalakane River at the southern edge of the Okavango Delta, a dry-land town that has grown into the safari hub of Botswana. Its streets are low and spread out, with shops, markets and a busy airport where light planes leave for lodges and airstrips across the delta. It has long been the main town of the Batawana people and of the cattle country of Ngamiland.

The Okavango is an inland delta, where a river from Angola spreads over the Kalahari sands into channels, lagoons and islands that are home to elephants, hippos, lions and countless birds. People glide through it in mokoros, traditional dugout canoes, or explore on foot and by boat from camps. Moremi Game Reserve lies on the eastern edge, and the Makgadikgadi salt pans and Chobe lie farther away.

Meals centre on beef, as elsewhere in Botswana, often with pap, a stiff maize porridge, and seswaa, pounded meat cooked slowly for celebrations. The delta's floodwater arrives from Angola around June to August, spreading out in the dry season and drawing wildlife to the water, so the cooler winter months are the busiest, while summer brings heat and rain.
