Kasane stands on the south bank of the Chobe River, close to the point where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe almost meet. The town is small and low-built, with lodges strung along the water and wooded country behind. Across the river lie the floodplains of Namibia's Zambezi Region, and the river itself, wide and slow, is the main attraction.

Chobe National Park begins just west of town and is known for one of Africa's largest elephant populations, with herds coming to drink along the riverfront in the dry months. Boat trips and game drives show hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, lions and fish eagles. The park stretches inland to the Savuti marsh channel, and Victoria Falls on the Zambezi lies within day-trip reach to the east.

Botswana's national dish is seswaa, beef boiled slowly and pounded until tender and eaten with maize porridge. The dry season from May to October draws wildlife to the river and gives the clearest game viewing, while the green rains of November to March bring migrant birds, and on any night the day ends around a braai, the southern African barbecue.
