Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, is a planned green city at the foot of the Margalla Hills, with a vast modern mosque and tree-lined streets.

Islamabad was designed in the early 1960s by the Greek planner Constantinos Doxiadis as a grid of numbered sectors, and replaced Karachi as the capital. It lies below the Margalla Hills, the foothills of the Himalayas, a green backdrop to the city. The Faisal Mosque, a modern tent-shaped building with four tall minarets, is one of the largest mosques in the world and dominates the skyline.
Trails climb the Margalla Hills National Park to viewpoints such as Daman-e-Koh, and Rawal Lake is a popular spot at the edge of town. The Pakistan Monument is shaped like a blooming flower, and the Lok Virsa museum shows crafts and folk traditions from across the country. Rawalpindi, the older twin city, has crowded bazaars. Taxila, a UNESCO site of Gandhara Buddhist ruins, lies to the north-west, and Murree, a hill station, sits in the Himalayan foothills.
Chapli kebabs, karahi, nihari and fresh naan are staples, with sweet tea and seasonal fruit at the stalls. Spring and autumn bring mild weather, the monsoon arrives in July and August, and winters are cool.
