Experience the best of Hebron

Hebron stands in the Judean hills of the southern West Bank at about 900 metres, roughly 30 km south of Jerusalem, and is one of the largest cities in the territory. At the heart of its old town is the Ibrahimi Mosque, also known as the Cave of the Patriarchs, built over the traditional burial place of Abraham and his family and sacred to Muslims, Jews and Christians. The old town has Mamluk-era stone buildings, vaulted lanes and a covered market, and was listed by UNESCO in 2017.

Part of the city lies under Israeli military control, including much of the old town, and visitors should expect checkpoints and restrictions on movement. The city's craft industries are long established, especially hand-blown glass and painted pottery, and its slopes are planted with grapevines, figs and olives. Bethlehem is about 20 km to the north, and the desert of the Judean hills falls away to the east.

Qidreh, lamb and rice slow-cooked with chickpeas and spices in a clay pot, is Hebron's best-known dish, and grape molasses, dibs, is made from the local harvest, with sweets sold in the old town. Spring and autumn are warm and clear, summer is hot and dry, and winters at this height can be cold, with occasional snow.
