Five Islands Village lies on the west coast of Antigua, a few kilometres from the capital, St John's. Houses and small plots of land line the road above a coast of bays and headlands, with the Caribbean on one side and the island's low hills on the other. It is a quiet place beside the sea, and the cathedral and harbour of St John's are a short drive away.
Deep Bay, a short way along the coast, is a sheltered cove where the wreck of the sailing ship Andes lies in shallow water, with the walls of Fort Barrington on the hill above. Across the island, English Harbour holds the Georgian dockyard that is now a World Heritage Site, Shirley Heights looks out over it, and the limestone arch of Devil's Bridge is on the wild east coast.
Antiguan cooking is simple and local: saltfish, fungee, a cornmeal pudding served with pepperpot stew, and ducana, a steamed parcel of sweet potato and coconut. Grilled snapper and lobster come in from the boats. The dry months run from December to April, and in any season the island's small black pineapples, famously sweet, are the fruit to look for.
