Experience the best of Dhaka

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh on the Buriganga River, is a dense, restless city of Mughal-era monuments, rickshaws and a busy river port.

Dhaka grew from a Mughal provincial capital on the Buriganga River into one of the most densely populated cities on earth. Old Dhaka holds most of the history: Lalbagh Fort, begun in 1678 and never finished, the pink Ahsan Manzil palace beside the river, and the Star Mosque with its mosaic of china tiles. The narrow lanes around them are filled with workshops and traders.

Sadarghat, the river port, is crowded with boats and launches that serve towns across the delta, and cycle rickshaws painted in bright patterns still fill many streets. The National Parliament House, designed by the American architect Louis Kahn, is a landmark of modern architecture. Further out lie Sonargaon, an old capital of Bengal with crumbling mansions, and the National Martyrs' Memorial at Savar.

Food is a draw in itself: kacchi biryani, bakarkhani, a thick crisp flatbread of Old Dhaka, fuchka street snacks, and hilsa, the prized river fish, cooked in mustard or steamed in banana leaf. Sweet shops sell sandesh and roshogolla, and tea comes strong and milky. The cool, dry months from November to February are the pleasantest, before the heat and the monsoon.
