Experience the best of Chittagong

Chittagong, also known as Chattogram, is the second-largest city in Bangladesh and its main seaport, on the Karnaphuli River a few kilometres from the Bay of Bengal. Built over low hills, it mixes busy bazaars, harbour wharves and quiet residential ridges lined with old trees and bungalows.

The Shah Amanat shrine and mosque, the Ethnological Museum, with displays on the peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and the Commonwealth war cemetery on a hillside are among the sights. Patenga Beach lies at the river mouth and Foy's Lake in the hills to the north. East of the city, the Hill Tracts rise around Kaptai Lake and Rangamati, and to the south the long beach at Cox's Bazar stretches along the bay.

Mezban feasts, where spiced beef curry is served at gatherings, and dried fish, known as shutki, are Chittagong specialities, with a strong taste of chilli. Monsoon rain falls heavily from June to September.
