Chișinău is the capital and largest city of Moldova, laid out on a grid of wide, tree-lined streets and rebuilt after damage in the Second World War and an earthquake in 1940. The Nativity Cathedral, begun in the 1830s, with a white bell tower, stands in a central park near the Triumphal Arch. Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard is the main avenue.
The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History shows the country's customs and wildlife, and Valea Morilor, a park with a lake, is a favourite place to stroll. Outside the city, Cricova and Mileștii Mici are wine producers whose cellars occupy huge networks of former limestone mines. Orheiul Vechi, a cave monastery above the Răut River, lies to the north, and the Codri hills are wooded.
Mămăligă, a cornmeal porridge served with cheese and sour cream, sarmale, cabbage rolls, and plăcinte, filled pastries, are the staples. Moldovan wine and a brandy called divin accompany them. National Wine Day brings a festival in early October, in the middle of the grape harvest.
