Bukhara lies in the desert of central Uzbekistan and was a major city of Central Asia on the Silk Road for centuries. Its old town, a World Heritage Site, is a maze of lanes with brick domes, mosques and madrasas. The Kalyan Minaret, a brick tower of 47 metres built in 1127, rises beside the Kalyan Mosque and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, and the Ark, a walled fortress on a mound, was home to the city's rulers.

The Samanid Mausoleum, from the ninth or tenth century, is a masterpiece of early brick architecture, and Lyabi Hauz is a plaza around a pool shaded by mulberry trees, with teahouses and madrasas on its sides. Three domed trading halls once held the bazaars for hats, jewellery and money changers. Chor Minor, a gatehouse with four small minarets, stands in a quiet lane to the east, and the burial place of Bahauddin Naqshband, founder of a Sufi order, is east of the city.

Plov, rice cooked with lamb, carrots and spices, samsa baked in a clay oven, shashlik and green tea are the staples of a meal, and round, stamped non bread comes warm from the bakeries. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, summers are extremely hot and winters cold. Craftsmen still make gold-thread embroidery, known as zardozi, and silk carpets.
