Experience the best of Beirut

Beirut is Lebanon's capital on a Mediterranean headland, a Phoenician port city with Roman remains and mountains rising close behind.

Beirut juts into the Mediterranean on a rocky headland, with the snow-streaked peaks of Mount Lebanon rising behind. Founded by the Phoenicians, it became the Roman city of Berytus, famed for its school of law, and the remains of Roman baths lie in the city centre. The Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, with its blue domes, and the nearby churches of St George show the mix of faiths.

The Corniche, a seafront promenade, runs west to the Pigeon Rocks, two sea stacks off the cliff at Raouché, and the National Museum holds Phoenician sarcophagi and Roman mosaics. The American University of Beirut, founded in 1866, has a green campus above the sea. Byblos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world, lies about forty kilometres north, with the caves of Jeita on the way, and Roman Baalbek is across the mountains.

Lebanese cooking is built on mezze: hummus, tabbouleh, fattoush, kibbeh and grilled meats, followed by knafeh and Arabic coffee. Manousheh, flatbread baked with thyme or cheese, is the breakfast bread. Wine from the Bekaa Valley and arak, an aniseed spirit, go with meals.
