Basse-Terre is the larger and wilder wing of Guadeloupe's butterfly shape, a green island of steep ridges that catch the trade-wind rain. Much of it forms the Guadeloupe National Park, a rainforest reserve, and at its heart La Soufrière, a volcano of 1,467 metres, is the highest peak in the Lesser Antilles.

Trails lead to the Carbet Falls, a trio of cascades in the forest, and to hot springs at Bouillante on the west coast. Off that coast the Cousteau Reserve around Pigeon Island is one of the Caribbean's best-known snorkelling and diving sites, named for the French diver who explored it. Basse-Terre town, the administrative capital of Guadeloupe, has a seventeenth-century fort, Fort Delgrès, above the sea.

Creole cooking mixes French technique with African, Indian and Caribbean ingredients: accras of salt cod, colombo, a curry spiced with a local powder, grilled fish and boudin créole. Coffee and rum come from the island's plantations. The drier months run from about January to April.
