Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, built on steep hills that fall to the sea. Its old quarter, the Casbah, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of stepped lanes and courtyard houses, with the Ketchaoua Mosque near its foot. Below it, boulevards from the French period face the harbour, and the Grande Poste, a white building in Neo-Moorish style, is one of the best-known landmarks.
High above the bay, the Notre-Dame d'Afrique basilica looks out to sea, and the Martyrs' Memorial, three concrete palm leaves around an eternal flame, rises over the city. On the bay's eastern shore the Great Mosque of Algiers holds the tallest minaret in the world. The Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, a botanical garden laid out in the 1830s, is full of tall palms, and the Roman ruins of Tipasa lie westward along the coast.
Couscous is the centrepiece of Algerian cooking, often served with lamb and vegetables, alongside chorba soup, grilled sardines from the bay and makroud, a date-filled semolina pastry soaked in honey. Mint tea and strong coffee fill the cafés. Spring and autumn are the gentlest seasons for climbing the steep streets.
