Visiting the interior of the bastions is like entering the ‘bowels’ of the Walls of Lucca which, incidentally, were never used for defensive purposes. The Walls of Lucca are a unique reality in regard to European city planning and architecture. Built during the Renaissance, today, they are a leading example of Italian fortification. About Lucca
Lucca is a walled Tuscan city of Renaissance ramparts, narrow lanes and an oval piazza, and the birthplace of the composer Giacomo Puccini.
Lucca is enclosed by intact Renaissance walls, about four kilometres around, topped by a tree-lined promenade used for walking and cycling above the rooftops. Within them the medieval street plan survives, with Via Fillungo as its shopping spine and many towers and churches. The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is an oval square built on the footprint of a Roman amphitheatre, and the Guinigi Tower grows holm oaks on its roof.
