Stockholm is Sweden's capital, spread across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, with a medieval old town, royal palaces and a vast archipelago.
Stockholm stands on fourteen islands joined by bridges, with water in nearly every view. Gamla Stan, the medieval Old Town, has cobbled lanes, the Royal Palace, the cathedral Storkyrkan and Stortorget square. The Vasa Museum houses a seventeenth-century warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised in 1961, one of the best-preserved ships of its age.
