About Boise
Boise is the capital of Idaho, a green city on the Boise River beneath the foothills, with a riverside path, Basque heritage and the outdoors at its door.
Boise grew along the Boise River from a military post and gold-rush supply town in the 1860s, and its name is said to come from French trappers who called the wooded valley les bois. The Idaho State Capitol, a sandstone building with a dome, is heated by geothermal water, and the Greenbelt, a path of about 40 kilometres, follows the river through parks and the university campus. The Old Idaho Penitentiary is now a museum, and Julia Davis Park holds a zoo and museums.
