  1. In one of the world's oldest museum dedicated to books, printing and writing, you will enter the high-security vault and get a close-up view of the Gutenberg Bible printed around 1450 in Mainz. Understand the impact of this masterpiece by the "Man of the Millennium". Another highlight is the live printing demonstration; sit down for 15 minutes and see how letters were cast and how pages were printed nearly 600 years ago by Johannes Gutenberg in his local workshop. See beautiful historic printing presses and learn about the many different aspects of the first generation of printed books.

  2. From the cathedral we will stroll through the nearby pedestrianised old town ("Altstadt"). We will wander around the magnificent cathedral square stopping at its colourful, ornately decorated old houses and the beautiful renaissance well. If we are lucky, we will also experience the traditional farmers' market which still takes place here every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (until 14:00) as it has for centuries.

  3. We will then walk along the romantic winding lanes of the medieval part of the city and discover picturesque little squares such as the Cherry Orchard ("Kirschgarten") with its half-timbered houses.

About Mainz

Mainz is a Rhine city and the home town of Gutenberg, with a thousand-year-old red sandstone cathedral, Chagall's blue windows and Rheinhessen wine.

Mainz stands on the west bank of the Rhine where the Main river joins it, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. St Martin's Cathedral, begun around 975, rises in red sandstone above the old town's market square. Johannes Gutenberg was born here, and the Gutenberg Museum displays original Bibles from his press, which launched printing with movable type in Europe around 1450.
