Most questions about the Big Bus in Berlin come down to three things: which stops sit near the sights you want, how long a loop takes, and what your ticket covers. This big bus Berlin FAQ answers those questions from the route and stop details, and sends you to the ticket page for anything that depends on the product you buy. Read the first section if you are deciding between the two routes, and the second if you are still choosing a ticket type.

Before you ride

The Big Bus in Berlin runs two routes. The Red Route also calls at Potsdamer Platz, the Berliner Mauer, Checkpoint Charlie, Gendarmenmarkt and Rotes Rathaus. The Blue Route is a short four-stop run through former East Berlin, with stops at Alexanderplatz, Karl-Marx-Allee, the East Side Gallery and Ostbahnhof. If your day is built around the central sights, the Red Route does most of the work, and the Blue Route is worth adding only if the East Side Gallery or Karl-Marx-Allee is on your list.

Choosing a ticket

Hop-on hop-off products in Berlin come from several operators, five products in all, and they fall into a few kinds: open-top or double-decker sightseeing loops, tours that add a river or boat cruise, and bus tickets bundled with an attraction or a second activity. The bus route is only one part of the decision, so start by asking which kind fits your day. Then read each ticket page for the route it covers, how long the ticket is valid and what a bundle includes, because those details vary between products and should not be assumed from the product name.

Questions about Big Bus Berlin

Is the Big Bus worth it in Berlin?

It is worth it if you want a fast overview of the centre on your first day or a simple way to link several landmarks without planning transit between them. The Red Route runs past the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie, which covers a lot of ground in one ride. It is less useful if your main interest is the museums on Museum Island or the cafés of Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg, since those are easier to explore on foot or by train.

How long does a route take?

For the loop length of the specific product you are considering, check its ticket page.

Where does the bus start?

Alexanderplatz is the first stop on both routes, so it is the simplest place to begin if you want to follow the route in order. Most hop-on hop-off services let you board at any stop, though a panoramic tour that does not stop along the way is the exception. Confirm the product type on its ticket page before you plan around boarding anywhere else.

Can children ride the Big Bus?

Getting off at a stop to walk for a while gives children a break from sitting. Whether children need their own ticket, and at what age the rules change, is set by each product, so check the ticket page before booking.

Is the Big Bus wheelchair accessible?

Vehicle access is not something to assume from the route alone. Check the ticket page for what it says about boarding, seating and wheelchair space, and contact the operator directly with any specific need before you buy.

Does the Big Bus stop at Checkpoint Charlie?

Yes, the Red Route has a stop at Checkpoint Charlie. The Topography of Terror is about 450 metres from that stop, a short walk if you want to add it to the same visit.

Which route goes to the East Side Gallery?

The Blue Route does. It is the short four-stop run through former East Berlin, with a stop at the East Side Gallery, and the Berlin Wall is about 350 metres from that stop. The Red Route does not call there, so the Blue Route is the choice if the wall murals are your priority.

Does the bus pass the Brandenburg Gate?

Yes, the Red Route has a stop at the Brandenburg Gate. Getting off at the Brandenburg Gate stop is the easiest way to walk to the gate itself and then carry on to the Reichstag.

Is the Holocaust Memorial reachable by bus?

No stop sits close enough to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe to make the bus a direct option. The memorial is part of a central cluster with the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, Gendarmenmarkt, Bebelplatz and the Topography of Terror, which fit together on foot in one half-day. Sachsenhausen and the Führerbunker also have no stop close by, so plan those visits separately.

How does a bus ride compare with a walking tour?

The bus is better for distance, such as getting from Alexanderplatz out west to Kurfürstendamm, which would be a long walk. A walk suits the central cluster, where the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Bebelplatz and Checkpoint Charlie sit close enough to combine in one half-day. Many visitors use the bus for the spread-out sights and walk the dense centre.

What languages is commentary available in?

Across the city's hop-on hop-off products, 21 languages are listed in total, including German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Chinese. Which languages a given bus offers is set by the product, so check the ticket page for the one you are considering.

Does one ticket cover both routes, and how long is it valid?

The route details here do not say which routes any ticket includes, so the ticket page is the place to confirm coverage. Some products are built around a single loop, while others bundle an attraction or a river cruise. Read the description of each one, including its validity, before comparing your options.

What is the weather like on the bus?

Late spring to early autumn gives the best conditions for riding on an open deck, with long daylight hours. Summer afternoons get busy at the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, so an early start helps. Winter rides can be cold and dark early, so plan the sights you most want around the daylight hours.
