6. The Klis Fortress is a medieval fortress situated above the village of Klis, near Split. Klis Fortress has guarded the frontier, being lost and re-conquered several times throughout its 2,000-year history. The fortress was used in a 1972 historical film Eagle in a Cage, portraying Saint Helena. Klis was also used as a location for the fictional city of Meereen in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Split is een drukke Dalmatische havenstad rond het paleis van een Romeinse keizer, met veerboten naar enkele van Kroatiës mooiste eilanden.

Het Diocletianuspaleis, rond de eeuwwisseling van de vierde eeuw gebouwd als pensioenverblijf van de keizer, is de oude stad zelf: achter de muren, kelders en binnenplaatsen bevinden zich woningen, winkels en cafés.
