6. The Klis Fortress is a medieval fortress situated above the village of Klis, near Split. Klis Fortress has guarded the frontier, being lost and re-conquered several times throughout its 2,000-year history. The fortress was used in a 1972 historical film Eagle in a Cage, portraying Saint Helena. Klis was also used as a location for the fictional city of Meereen in the HBO series Game of Thrones.
