Okinawa's best nights don't happen on the main street. They happen one floor up, one alley over, behind a door with no English sign. On this three-hour small-group bar hopping tour, a local guide takes you into three very different corners of Naha's nightlife, all within walking distance of Kokusai-dori. You start upstairs in a hidden Okinawan izakaya most visitors never find, with a shared plate of island specialities and your first glass of awamori. Then you step into the senbero alley behind Makishi Public Market, where locals drink standing up. You finish in the old Sakurazaka quarter, in a small neighbourhood bar where the owner knows every regular by name. Your guide reads the handwritten menu, orders the good stuff, explains what's in front of you and introduces you to the people drinking next to you. Groups are capped at eight. Food and drinks at all three bars are included. Note: Japan's drinking age is 20. Guests aged 13-19 are welcome and are served soft drinks.
Your evening starts on Okinawa's most famous street, where your guide meets the group and explains how the night will run before you slip off the main strip into the backstreets.
In the lanes behind the market you visit two of the evening's bars: first a hidden upstairs izakaya for an Okinawan tasting set and your first awamori, then a standing senbero bar in the alley where locals drink shoulder to shoulder for about a thousand yen.
The night finishes in Naha's old Sakurazaka quarter, in a small neighbourhood bar where the owner knows every regular. Your guide introduces the group, orders the last round and helps you swap stories with the locals before everyone says goodnight.

Naha is the capital of Okinawa, a subtropical port city with the Ryukyu kingdom's hilltop castle, a lively market street and Okinawan cooking.
Naha is the capital and main port of Okinawa Prefecture, on the west coast of Okinawa's main island in the East China Sea. For centuries it served the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose kings lived at Shuri Castle on a hill above the city, and the castle site and the nearby Tamaudun royal tombs are part of a World Heritage listing. Kokusai-dori, the International Street, runs through the centre lined with shops, and Makishi Public Market sells fish and pork.
