Points forts

Once the tour is booked, you can come to our rental point to collect the bikes, so you can start with our virtual guide, which will accompany you step by step. The tour is a scenic loop starting from San Gimignano, along urban roads, white gravel roads, vineyards, olive groves, and with continuous views of its famous medieval towers. The route is 29 km with 500 m of elevation gain: it is a bit hard and technical, as long as you have a good level of confidence on dirt roads and on a few short climbs. Along the itinerary there is a stop at Fattoria Poggio Alloro, with beautiful views over San Gimignano, perfect for a snack break or to end the tour with a wine tasting and cellar visit. A medieval village on the Via Francigena, San Gimignano is now a UNESCO site: of the more than 70 towers from the 14th century, 14 still remain today.

Itinéraire

  1. 'San Gimignano delle belle Torri' is in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. It served as an important relay point for pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) as symbols of their wealth and power.

  2. Monteriggioni is one of the few examples of medieval military architecture and preserves the ancient city walls and fourteen towers practically intact. The castle was built by the Sienese (1214) as an outpost against the Florentines.

About San Gimignano

San Gimignano, in Tuscany, is a hill town of medieval stone towers, built on a ridge above the vineyards of the Elsa valley.

San Gimignano rises on a hilltop in the Tuscan countryside south-west of Florence, its skyline pricked by medieval towers built by rival families as symbols of wealth. More than a dozen still stand. The town is listed by UNESCO, and its stone streets run between two gates to the Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular square with a thirteenth-century well, beside the Piazza del Duomo.

Top-ranked sights in San Gimignano: Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo di San Gimignano).
