Itinéraire

  1. The square is first mentioned in 1755 and is named after a theatre that burned down in 1785 and 1855. The Place became the focal point of the city when, in the mid-19th century the railway station Gare de Montpellier Saint-Roch was built some 200 metres (660 ft) south of it. At that time, a smaller train going to the nearby beach at Palavas-les-Flots also had its provenance on the Place.

About Montpellier

Montpellier is a sunny university city in southern France with a pedestrian old town, a handsome main square and beaches within easy reach.

Montpellier's old centre, the Écusson, is a shield-shaped web of lanes closed to cars, centred on the oval Place de la Comédie, where the Three Graces fountain stands in front of the 19th-century opera house. The cathedral of Saint-Pierre has a vast porch resting on two cylindrical pillars. The city is a university town, and its medical faculty dates back to the Middle Ages.
