  1. Kevin will guide you around this buzzing area where the city’s industrial past meets its creative present. Its streets are lined with 19th-century red-brick warehouses and former textile buildings, many of which once formed part of Manchester’s thriving cotton and manufacturing economy. Today, those buildings house independent cafés, bars, record shops, vintage stores, restaurants, galleries and creative businesses.

  2. Here you will be on hallowed ground in the history of Manchester and the UK.. The site of the 1819 Peterloo massacre and of many meetings and concerts which had huge reverberations, nationally and internationally.

  3. Far more than a beautiful Victorian building: it is one of Manchester’s great cultural and intellectual landmarks. Opened in 1900, the library was founded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband, Manchester industrialist and millionaire John Rylands. Its neo-Gothic interior was deliberately conceived to resemble a medieval church, creating the extraordinary atmosphere you can experience today. Its collections are internationally important, containing rare books, manuscripts, archives and religious texts spanning thousands of years. Among its treasures is a fragment of the Gospel of John, generally dated to the second century, making it one of the earliest surviving fragments of the New Testament. Another is the Manchester Odyssey, the earliest copy of Homer's epic, a cornerstone of Western Civilisation. The library also tells an important story about Manchester's transformation from an industrial powerhouse into a major centre of education, culture and scholarship

  4. Here, and in nearby Albert Square, you will be in the Civic heart of Manchester, and on the edge of the warehouse 'Palazzo' district. Here you will also see many reminders that most of the world's cotton was once traded here. Enjoy the sight of Waterhouse's magnificent town hall facing No. 10 North, weekly Government HQ under the premiership of Andy Burnham.

  5. Where Manchester’s Roman beginnings meet its industrial past and modern regeneration. It is one of the most atmospheric parts of the city, with canals, railway arches, red-brick warehouses, the world's oldest railway station and cobbled streets creating a distinctive sense of Manchester’s history. Added to this wonderful backdrop there is the natural ampitheatre of Castlefield Bowl, setting for many summer concerts.

About Manchester

Manchester, the former cotton capital of north-west England, is a city of red-brick mills, canals, football, music and big museums.

Manchester grew in the nineteenth century as the centre of the cotton trade, and the warehouses, mills and canals of that age still shape the city. The Gothic Revival Town Hall by Alfred Waterhouse dominates Albert Square, the John Rylands Library holds a Victorian reading hall of carved stone and stained glass, and Castlefield has a Roman fort beside the canal basin. The Science and Industry Museum stands at the oldest surviving passenger railway station in the world.

Top-ranked sights in Manchester: Etihad Stadium (City of Manchester Stadium), Manchester Cathedral, Manchester Central Library.
