Surat Thani is a river city on Thailand's Gulf coast, the mainland gateway to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and to Khao Sok's rainforest.
Surat Thani sits on the Tapi River in southern Thailand, a few kilometres from the Gulf coast, and is the main transport hub for the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, which lie offshore. Ferries leave from piers outside the city, while the town centre keeps a riverfront promenade, markets and a night food market. Fishing boats work the river mouth and the bay.
