The cape marks the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar and the meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse built in 1864 is a historic landmark building in Tangier.

The legend states that it was the last resting place for Hercules after performing one of the twelve Labors given to him by King Eurystheus. The cave was used by the Berber people as a quarry for making grinding millstones.
