1. Kaymaklı Underground City is a significant subterranean structure created by local inhabitants—who were frequently subjected to attacks—to serve as a refuge during emergencies. As one of the largest underground cities in the Cappadocia region, Kaymaklı dates back to the 7th century BC. Although the city originated during the Hittite era, it also bears traces of the Phrygians and Assyrians. It was further expanded through excavation during the Roman and Byzantine periods. In Ottoman records, Kaymaklı is referred to by the Greek names *Anaku* or *Enegüp*, while locally it was known as *Eneği*.

Situated in the very heart of modern day Turkey this natural wonder sits on a high plateau over a thousand meters in altitude. Rainfall is sparse in this area and the place has hot dry summers and bitterly cold snowy winters. There is little rainfall and so the region is generally arid. In this environment these huge phallic natural structures seems like some sort of ancient homage to male fertility. However, they are far from man-made despite the possible resemblance to manhood.
