Itinéraire

  1. Start where medieval travelers once held their breath. This wasn’t just a gate — it was Augsburg’s first line of judgment, tolls, and occasional smuggling creativity.

    15 min

  2. Behind these walls lies the world’s oldest social housing still in use. Rent: less than a pretzel. Requirement: pray for the founder’s soul, daily. No pressure.

    15 min

  3. Gothic arches, Romanesque bones, and windows that glow with 12th-century drama. Plus, someone very important is buried here. Quietly.

    15 min

  4. Between a golden hall and a statue of Augustus striking a pose, this square tells more than meets the eye. Just pay attention to what’s standing at the corners.

    15 min

  5. A hidden chapel where wealth met reform. Renaissance ceilings, Fugger tombs, and that awkward time Martin Luther stayed the night.

    15 min

  6. Polished wood, velvet chairs, and a cake buffet under €5. This café doesn’t just serve sweets — it serves local lore with whipped cream on top.

    15 min

  7. These weren’t homes. They were financial flexes. Renaissance courtyards, imperial guests, and a banking dynasty that somehow still holds the keys.

    15 min

  8. Cobblestone lanes, leaning houses, and canals that once powered mills and now host beer gardens. It’s Augsburg’s softest voice — and its deepest breath.

About Augsburg

Augsburg is a Bavarian city founded by the Romans, with the world's oldest social housing, a Renaissance town hall and a canal system on UNESCO's list.

Augsburg was founded around 15 BC as a Roman military camp, making it one of Germany's oldest cities. In 1521 the banker Jakob Fugger founded the Fuggerei, a walled quarter of small houses for needy citizens that is still lived in today at a symbolic rent. The Renaissance town hall, completed in 1624, has the Golden Hall, a banquet room with a gilded ceiling, and stands beside the Perlach Tower.

Top-ranked sights in Augsburg: Fuggerei, Augsburg Town Hall, Schaezlerpalais.
