Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, home to hundreds of ethnic groups. Lagos, the largest city, spreads across islands and the mainland around a lagoon, with beaches, Afrobeat clubs and busy markets such as Balogun. Abuja, the capital, was built in the middle of the country, a planned city of wide roads beneath Aso Rock, with the huge granite dome of Zuma Rock on the road north.

Beyond the two cities, the sacred Osun-Osogbo grove, a UNESCO-listed forest of shrines and sculptures, lies in the south-west. Kano's old walled city and dye pits stand in the north. Yankari Game Reserve has elephants and warm springs, and the Niger Delta spreads into creeks and mangroves on the coast.

Jollof rice, suya, spiced skewered beef, pounded yam with egusi soup, and fried plantain are classic dishes, and street stalls sell puff puff and moi moi. Palm wine is a traditional drink. In the south the rains run from April to October, and the north is dry and dusty between November and March, with the harmattan haze.
