About Bishkek
Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, a green, grid-planned city of Soviet-era squares and parks at the foot of the Ala-Too mountains.
Bishkek stands in the Chui valley at the foot of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, whose snow peaks show above the rooftops to the south. The city grew from a 19th-century fortress, was named Frunze in the Soviet period, and took back the name Bishkek in 1991. Its wide, straight avenues are lined with trees, and Ala-Too Square, with its flagpole and the State History Museum, is the ceremonial centre.
