Bishkek stands in the Chui valley at the foot of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, whose snow peaks show above the rooftops to the south. The city grew from a 19th-century fortress, was named Frunze in the Soviet period, and took back the name Bishkek in 1991. Its wide, straight avenues are lined with trees, and Ala-Too Square, with its flagpole and the State History Museum, is the ceremonial centre.
Osh Bazaar, a market of fruit, spices and bread, is the liveliest corner of town, and Oak Park and Victory Square offer shade. Ala Archa National Park, a valley of glaciers and alpine meadows, is a short drive south. The 11th-century Burana Tower, a minaret left from the ancient city of Balasagun, stands about 60 kilometres east, and Lake Issyk-Kul, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, is a few hours away.
Lagman, hand-pulled noodles in a spiced broth, boorsok, puffs of fried dough, and plov are on most menus, samsa comes out of clay ovens, and beshbarmak is served at feasts. Kymyz, fermented mare's milk, is a summer drink. Green tea, poured into small bowls, comes with every meal, and the city is hot in summer and snowy in winter.
