Itinerary

  1. Our first stop will be in the Juma Mosque of Shamakhi, or the Friday Mosque of Shamakhi (Azerbaijani: Şamaxı Cümə Məscidi), a mosque in the city of Shamakhi, Azerbaijan. Construction date of the mosque- 743-744 relies on research of a geological commission coming from Tiflis, which was led by Prince Shahgulu Qajar. This date was defined with Arabic ligature on the facade of the Friday Mosque, stating the year 126 according to the Islamic calendar as the establishment year.[1] Just in this period, the construction of new religious buildings – mosques – was begun in the territory of Azerbaijan. The historical appearance of ancient Islamic architectural monuments was related to the Arabs’ governance and the spread of Islam in the territory of Azerbaijan. Friday Mosque of Shamakhi is considered the first mosque in the Caucasus after the Cathedral Friday Mosque of Derbent, which was constructed in 734.

About Baku

Baku is Azerbaijan's capital on the Caspian Sea, where a walled medieval old town sits beside oil-era mansions and glass towers shaped like flames.

The walled Old City, Icherisheher, is a UNESCO-listed maze of lanes with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, both medieval. Beyond the walls, grand mansions from the oil boom of the late nineteenth century line the streets, and a long boulevard runs beside the Caspian. The three Flame Towers glow on the skyline, and Zaha Hadid's curving Heydar Aliyev Centre is a landmark of modern architecture.

Top-ranked sights in Baku: Bibi-Heybat Mosque (Bibiheybet Mescidi), Yanar Dag, Baku Old City (Icherisheher).
