Experience the best of Baku
Baku is Azerbaijan's capital on the Caspian Sea, where a walled medieval old town sits beside oil-era mansions and glass towers shaped like flames.

The walled Old City, Icherisheher, is a UNESCO-listed maze of lanes with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, both medieval. Beyond the walls, grand mansions from the oil boom of the late nineteenth century line the streets, and a long boulevard runs beside the Caspian. The three Flame Towers glow on the skyline, and Zaha Hadid's curving Heydar Aliyev Centre is a landmark of modern architecture.
On the Absheron Peninsula, Yanar Dag is a hillside where natural gas has burned for decades, and the Ateshgah is a fire temple that drew pilgrims from India and Persia. About an hour south, Gobustan has rock carvings thousands of years old and small bubbling mud volcanoes. Baku is a windy place, a trait often linked to its name, and the Caspian promenade is pleasant for evening walks.
Azerbaijani cooking leans on plov, rice with lamb and dried fruit, qutab flatbreads filled with herbs or meat, stuffed dolma and fresh Caspian fish, followed by sweet pakhlava and tea poured into small pear-shaped glasses. Novruz, the spring festival in March, brings bonfires and sprouted wheat. Spring and autumn are mild, summer is hot and dry, and winter can be cold and breezy off the sea.
