Highlights

For individual travellers, a private guide is generally a much better option than the long drawn-out and often boring bus tours. A private tour gives you a real personal experience. It is possible to stop anywhere, anytime upon request. Communication with the guide is easy - not like in a bus.

Itinerary

  1. Esztergom was the first capital of Hungary, 1000 years ago. Our state founder, King St. Stephen, was born here. Today it's the Head of the Hungarian Roman Catholic Church. Here we'll visit the largest Cathedral in Central and Eastern Europe, including the crypt where Cardinal Mindszenty was reburied. Travel time: 70-80 min.

    2.3 h

  2. Visegrád is located in the middle of the Danube Bend. It was Hungary's Royal Seat in the 14th and 15th centuries. There is a fortress on the hilltop with a breathtaking view to the hair-pin turn of the Danube. This is one of the rare places where the river actually looks blue - as it is in the famous Blue Danube waltz, composed by Johann Strauss. The castle functions as a museum today where visitors can get an authentic mediaeval impression. Travel time: 25-35 min.

    1.5 h

  3. Szentendre is also known as an "artists' village". It has been favoured by many local artists because of its friendly and picturesque ambience. Thanks to the former Serbian refugees, who originally came here to escape the Turkish/Ottoman invasions of Central Europe, there is a kind of Serbian atmosphere in the village even to this day. There are narrow, cobblestone streets, colorful houses with small courtyards, museums and lots of handicraft shops. The trip back to Budapest can be made on a boat, if you prefer. Travel time: 40-50 min.

About Budapest

Budapest joins hilly Buda and flat Pest across the Danube, a grand capital of thermal baths, riverside palaces and lively ruin bars.

On the Buda side, Castle Hill holds Buda Castle, the Matthias Church and the white turrets of Fishermen's Bastion, all looking down on the river. The Chain Bridge crosses to Pest, where the Hungarian Parliament Building stretches along the bank and St Stephen's Basilica rises a few streets inland. Gellért Hill and its Citadella give the widest views.

Top-ranked sights in Budapest: House of Parliament (Országház), Buda Castle (Budai Vár), Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lanchid) .
