In the Middle Ages, a tower with a bell was built at the site as a coastal defense against pirate invasions. The bell was rung as a warning to nearby towns whenever danger approached. It is also currently a nature preserve.

5. On a clear day as you cross the Bay you will see to your right the still active Volcano, Mount Vesuvius, looming over the city of Naples and the Bay.

About Salerno

Salerno is a port city at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, with a Norman cathedral, a palm-lined seafront and a castle on the hill above.

Salerno curves around a gulf with a long palm-lined waterfront, the Lungomare, and a medieval centre of narrow lanes behind it. The cathedral, begun in the eleventh century under the Norman duke Robert Guiscard, has an arcaded atrium and a tall bell tower, and the city was home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, one of the earliest medical schools in Europe.
