Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic and historically important castles. Built in the early 1600s by the powerful lord Kato Kiyomasa, it is known for its black main keep, sweeping stone walls, and impressive scale. Unlike many castles in Japan, Kumamoto Castle experienced real warfare—twice—and was never captured, earning a reputation as an unshakable fortress. The castle has long stood as a symbol of Kumamoto City, admired for its architectural beauty and commanding presence. However, in 2016, a devastating earthquake caused significant damage to its walls and turrets. While the main keep survived, much of the structure required restoration. Today, Kumamoto Castle is undergoing a large-scale reconstruction using a blend of traditional techniques and modern technology. Visitors can explore the grounds and witness this rare and inspiring process—an experience that brings history to life and showcases the resilience of both the castle and the city it represents.

About Kumamoto
Kumamoto is the main city of central Kyushu, known for its black-walled castle, a classical garden, hot springs and the vast volcanic caldera of Mount Aso.
Kumamoto stands on the plain of central Kyushu, where springwater from the Aso mountains feeds the rivers. Its castle, raised in the early 1600s by the warlord Kato Kiyomasa, has black timber walls and curving stone ramparts built to be hard to climb. Suizenji Jojuen, a garden laid out in the seventeenth century, shapes a miniature of the Tokaido road around a pond, with a small hill standing for Mount Fuji.
