Itinerario
Chrysotile is a privately owned, abandoned mining city nestled within the pristine landscape of Tonto National Forest. Gates open at 8:00 a.m., and shortly afterward, guests can join a short tour of several historic attractions. Stops include the abandoned jailhouse, schoolhouse, machine shop, and miner’s barracks, along with the farmhouse, manager’s house, and mess hall. This privately owned mining city has not been open to the public since 1945.
After check-in, our camphost can provide a off-roading tour through Ash Creek Canyon. They will highlight all the points of interest so that you can explore at your own pace. You will hear where the trailheads, swimming holes, waterfalls, mine entrances, and historic sites are located around the 420 acres. Hike the old mining-burro route to the creek bottom for a swimming hole and waterfall, then discover more pools, rock formations, canyon views, photo spots, and places to picnic.
Continue enjoying the canyon and explore at your own pace. We’re happy to point you toward trailheads, swimming holes, waterfalls, mine entrances, and historic sites. Hike the old mining-burro route to the creek bottom for a swimming hole and waterfall, then discover more pools, rock formations, canyon views, photo spots, and places to picnic.
Another exciting adventure option is a visit to Moon Canyon. After a short drive to a grassy field, guests will begin a scenic hike along a winding path over rocks and boulders. The trail continues around trees, across logs, and over the creek as you make your way past a small dam. Guests will navigate around giant boulders to reach a geologically unique area where the creek bed is formed from rock and sand compressed together over thousands of years. This is a great place to play in the creek, explore, take photos, or enjoy a snack surrounded by the beauty of the canyon.
Another attraction guests may choose to explore is the Victory Mine, the largest mine on the property. Guests are welcome to venture inside, but please be aware that mines can present hazards such as uneven footing, dark surroundings, and old ladders. Wear sturdy, appropriate clothing and shoes, and bring proper gear, including a headlamp and backup flashlight. For a more in-depth experience, we offer a guided mine tour that explores the mine’s rooms, artifacts, and fascinating mining history. This approximately 3-hour tour is separate from the Day Pass.
With the $50 Day Pass entrance for one vehicle and everyone in it, you’re welcome to extend your adventure and camp overnight while exploring the Lost Mining City of Chrysotile, Arizona. Standard camping is $100 per night—simply pay the difference to stay the night. Prefer not to tent camp? Cabins are also available to rent onsite.
