6. The View: From the water, Atrani appears as a compact "nativity scene" (presepe) of pastel houses. It is the smallest town in Italy by surface area, and its verticality is most impressive from a boat. "As we glide past Atrani, look up toward the clouds—that’s Ravello. While Atrani was the historic residence of the Amalfi Republic’s aristocracy, Ravello was their hilltop retreat."

About Amalfi

Amalfi is a steep seaside town on Italy's Amalfi Coast, once a powerful medieval maritime republic, with a striped cathedral and lemon terraces above.

Amalfi tumbles down a narrow gorge to a small harbour. In the Middle Ages it was one of Italy's great maritime republics, trading across the Mediterranean, and the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, with its striped facade, bronze doors and cloister, recalls that wealth. A broad flight of steps climbs to the cathedral from the piazza, and lanes behind the main street are lined with shops selling lemon products and paper.
