Experience the best of Yangon
Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, is a river port of colonial buildings and temples crowned by the gold stupa of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Yangon spreads beside the Yangon River in the delta of the Irrawaddy. The Shwedagon Pagoda, a gilded stupa nearly a hundred metres high on a hill above the city, is its great monument and a place of daily worship, reached by covered stairways. Near the centre, the Sule Pagoda stands in the middle of a traffic roundabout. Yangon was the national capital until the mid-2000s.
Downtown keeps a wide cluster of British-era buildings, including the City Hall, the High Court and the red-brick Secretariat. Bogyoke Aung San Market sells gems and crafts, Kandawgyi Lake has a gilded barge-shaped hall on its shore, and the Chaukhtatgyi reclining Buddha is a vast painted figure. The Circular Railway makes a slow loop of the suburbs, and Bago and Thanlyin lie outside the city.
Mohinga, a fish broth with rice noodles eaten for breakfast, is the national dish, and laphet thoke, a salad of fermented tea leaves, is a favourite. Tea shops serve sweet milky tea with samosas, and the stalls of Chinatown's 19th Street grill skewers in the evening. The monsoon runs from May to October, and the cool season from November to February is drier.
