Willemstad is built around St Anna Bay, the inlet that splits the town into Punda and Otrobanda. Rows of pastel merchants' houses in Dutch colonial style line the Handelskade waterfront, and a pontoon footbridge, the Queen Emma Bridge, swings open for ships. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue, with its sand floor, is among the oldest in the Americas.
Outside town, Curaçao is dry, rocky and edged by small coves. Shete Boka National Park has surf crashing into sea caves, and Christoffel National Park holds the island's highest hill. Beaches such as Cas Abao, Playa Kenepa and Playa Lagun, with clear water for snorkelling and diving, lie along the west coast. Old plantation houses, called landhuizen, dot the countryside.
Papiamentu, a language that mixes Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and African words, is heard everywhere, and the cooking mixes just as freely. Keshi yena, a cheese shell stuffed with spiced meat, stobá stew, funchi cornmeal and fresh fish are staples. Blue Curaçao liqueur is flavoured with the peel of the laraha, a bitter orange grown on the island. Sun and trade winds are constant.
